The following post is mainly for parents, I am too young to have children, but I do babysit kids and I know what they should and shouldn't be watching.
If you have children, of course, you want them to grow up and become successful. Every child makes mistakes, but you wouldn't want your child to make a huge mistake because of you, would you? What is on t.v. in this generation is despicable. I would not want my child (again if I had one) to be influenced by the things that are shown to millions of people world wide. What a child definitely needs to know is that some things are meant to be seen only by their parents.
Let's say a six year old boy is flipping through channels and he suddenly spots an animation show. He already has seen other animation shows like "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Jake and the Never land Pirates etc." so he probably will think this show is similar. What he doesn't know is the difference between Family Guy and an appropriate, kid friendly animation. He could get hooked to that show. Then maybe even start saying "catch phrases", that he has heard from the show, to his friends in school. If you have seen Family Guy you know that they sometimes say a curse word or two. What would happen if he started saying those words at school?
That incident could all be avoided if we pay attention to what our kids are watching. Those type of shows are bad for our children. They teach bad meanings and influence bad behavior, such as fighting, cursing etc. We need to also pay attention to the characters in the shows, they could be bad role models and soon our children could start acting like them.
Here is a list of bad role models that we should definitely look out for in shows.
- Remember that strawberry scented, pinkaholic, girl that owned a blueberry dog and a strawberry cat? Well believe it or not Strawberry Shortcake is a bad role model. She is because, if you compare her in 1990s and now, she had a complete make over. This could be a bad influence to your, most likely girl, child. Your daughter could watch this and then come to you and want to dress up in all pink, clothes, make up shoes etc. It could also make your child start to care about what she looks like. Sort of like what Strawberry Shortcake does.
- Sam Puckett (Jennette Mccurdy) from ICarly is also a bad role model for kids because she is disobedient, doesn't care about her schoolwork, is in fact a bully in both physical and verbal ways, and doesn't listen to her mother.
- Even though Wizard of Waverly Place ended they still show reruns on Disney Channel. The bad role model on that show is alot like Sam from ICarly except she is Alex (Selena Gomez). She doesn't listen to her parents, sometimes isn't a good friend to Harper (which is the good role model from that show), she also doesn't do well in school (as shown in many episodes she does get way too many detentions), and last she bully her brother.
- Jade( Elizabeth Gillies) from Victorious is a bad role model also. I am surprised that Nickelodeon allows this, but on the show they have shown Jade making out with her boyfriend Beck which is not a good influence for 6-10 year olds that are watching this. They might think it's ok for them to do that also. Jade also doesn't care about anyone else. Also she doesn't care for Tori and bully's her often in the show too, but verbally.
Outstanding post. You covered this topic almost to perfection, and I like how you took an original approach to your list of bad role models.
